Churchill AVRE was a Churchill IV armed with a 290 mm Petard spigot mortar. The mount replaced the 6 pounder gun in cast turrets on the Mark IV. The 6 pounder gun mounting was modified, and retained the 6 pounder sights although "flying dustbin" effective range was only around 80 yards of 230 maximum. AVRE's could also be modified with mounts and supports to carry a ready-assembled Small Box Girder Bridge from the front glacis plate. This could be dropped over gaps similar to traditional engineer bridging, or used to provide a ramp over a wall. Designer M Bergman
