Gepanzerter Mannschaftstransportwagen MTW, used by the Reichwehr as the Sd. Kfz. 3. By the time surviving Schupo Sonderwagen 21 were converted into this type early in the 1930s, the Sd. Kfz. 3 had already shown that it was poorly designed for its intended role as a troop carrier with cross-country capability. It was slow, clumsy, heavy and, with its 11 ton weight supported by large (but relatively narrow) solid rubber tyres, a particularly difficult ride off-road. Designer M Bergman
